About Pongal/Sankranti Puja

Pongal (Tamil) or Makar Sankranti (North Indian) is a harvest festival celebrating prosperity, gratitude to the Sun God, and the beginning of Uttarayana (northward movement of the sun). This joyous puja marks agricultural abundance and new beginnings. The ceremony includes Surya (Sun) worship, boiling of fresh rice (symbolic of prosperity overflow), cattle worship, and thanksgiving rituals. It's a celebration of nature's bounty and farmer's hard work.

When to Perform

Pongal/Sankranti is celebrated on January 14-15 every year when the sun enters Capricorn. The main puja is performed in the morning during sunrise, with the traditional pongal rice being cooked outdoors.
